🏧 ATMs & money
Fees: It's euro country, and most banks here do surcharge foreign cards ~€2–4 per withdrawal.
Limits: Usually €300–600 per pull.
Best machines: Hipotekarna BankaCKBNLB
Simplest play: arrive with EUR cash — it's the local currency, so no exchange needed at all. Withdraw rarely and large when you must.
🩺 Health & safety
Vaccines: Routine only.
Health: Tap water is fine on the coast. Summer sun is fierce on those white stone streets — hats and water. At Ada Bojana, swim the lagoon side with kids; where river meets sea the current is honest.
Tap water: ✅ Coastal tap water is safe to drink; refill and skip the bottles.
Safety: Coastal Montenegro is small-town safe (~2/100k). The genuine risk is the roads: twisty, dramatic, occasionally shared with confident drivers — take the bus at night and it's solved. August crowds are the other 'hazard'; June and September are the same sea, calmer.
Emergency: 112
🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free
Plant-based: Coastal menus lean fish + grilled veg; posna dishes and excellent tomatoes-cheese-olive spreads carry vegetarians.
Gluten-free: Grilled fish and meats are safe; bread arrives with everything — just wave it off.
'Bez mesa' = without meat · konoba owners will improvise happily if you ask.
🛂 Visa & entry
For most short tourist trips, citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia and New Zealand either enter visa-free or get a simple online authorisation (an eVisa or eTA) before flying. Typical visa-free stays run 30–90 days. Some countries want a visa arranged in advance, and a growing number ask you to fill an online arrival or eVisa form even when 'visa-free' — so always check the official portal for your exact nationality before you book.
Rules change — always verify with an official source for your nationality before you book.
💬 Traveller tips & reports
Order fish by the kilo, at the river — The stilt restaurants weigh the catch at your table. Agree the per-kilo price, add a salad and a litre of white — that’s the whole evening, and it’s cash only.
