Panama uses the US dollar (the 'balboa' is 1:1), so no exchange needed at all — just bring/withdraw USD. On Bocas islands, ATMs are few and can run out; carry enough cash over from the mainland.

Health: Panama City tap water is safe to drink; on Bocas del Toro islands drink bottled. Caribbean sun and reef cuts are the Bocas hazards — reef shoes, sunscreen. Panama City has first-rate private hospitals (Punta Pacífica).

Safety: Panama City and Bocas del Toro are calm and tourist-friendly. Standard city sense in the capital (Uber, ATMs indoors); Bocas is a mellow island-hopper's town. Avoid the Darién Gap entirely — it's a genuine no-go, nowhere near your route.

For most short tourist trips, citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia and New Zealand either enter visa-free or get a simple online authorisation (an eVisa or eTA) before flying. Typical visa-free stays run 30–90 days. Some countries want a visa arranged in advance, and a growing number ask you to fill an online arrival or eVisa form even when 'visa-free' — so always check the official portal for your exact nationality before you book.

Share every water taxi — Getting anywhere means boats, and solo charters add up fast. Cluster at the town docks, split the fare with other travellers heading to Starfish Beach or Bastimentos, and a $20 boat becomes $4 each. The snorkelling stops along the way are the free bonus.
