🏧 ATMs & money

Fees: Eurozone: bank ATMs add no surcharge; only Euronet boxes do.
Limits: Typically €300–700 per pull at bank machines.
Best machines: Slovenská sporiteľňaTatra bankaVÚB
Cards work everywhere; keep a €20 note for markets and you're covered.

🩺 Health & safety

Vaccines: Routine; tick-borne encephalitis for Tatra hikers.
Health: Tap water excellent, healthcare solid.
Tap water: ✅ Excellent and safe straight from the tap.
Safety: Bratislava is a small, calm capital — the statistics barely register. Weekend stag groups are louder than any local danger; two streets away is silence.
Emergency: 112

🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free

Plant-based: Bryndzové halušky is vegetarian (sheep cheese); fasting-food tradition helps vegans in rural spots; Bratislava has modern veg bistros.
Gluten-free: Halušky are potato-flour based but check; grills + potato dishes are the safe rail.
'Bezlepkový' = GF · 'bez mäsa' = without meat.

🛂 Visa & entry

This is a Schengen-area country. Most US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian, NZ, Brazilian, Japanese and Korean passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone. From 2025 the EU's ETIAS pre-authorisation applies to visa-free non-EU visitors — check before you fly.
Rules change — always verify with an official source for your nationality before you book.

💬 Traveller tips & reports

Two capitals, one afternoon — Vienna is 60 minutes and $8 away — sleep in Bratislava at half the price, day-trip the Habsburgs, come home for $2 beer.
