🏧 ATMs & money

Fees: Most bank and LINK machines are marked 'FREE cash withdrawals' — trust the label; convenience-store boxes charging £1.50–2 are the ones to skip.
Limits: Typically £300–500 per pull at bank machines.
Best machines: BarclaysLloydsHSBC
Always charge in pounds, never the 'helpful' home-currency option. Exchange offices are unnecessary — the free ATM network wins.

🩺 Health & safety

Vaccines: Routine only.
Health: Tap water great; pharmacies and NHS walk-in centres handle traveller mishaps. Edinburgh weather is the health hazard: four seasons before lunch — layer.
Tap water: ✅ Excellent and safe — Edinburgh tap water is soft and clean. Refill freely.
Safety: Edinburgh is one of the UK's safest cities. Weekend Cowgate gets merry rather than menacing; licensed cabs home and it's a non-topic. Arthur's Seat in proper shoes, not after the third whisky.
Emergency: 999 or 112

🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free

Plant-based: The UK is Europe's vegan-label champion — every supermarket, pub and chippy has marked options; haggis comes in a beloved veggie version.
Gluten-free: GF is legally labeled everywhere; chippies increasingly run dedicated GF fryers (check the sign).
Just read the label — UK menus mark V, VG and GF as standard.

🛂 Visa & entry

For most short tourist trips, citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia and New Zealand either enter visa-free or get a simple online authorisation (an eVisa or eTA) before flying. Typical visa-free stays run 30–90 days. Some countries want a visa arranged in advance, and a growing number ask you to fill an online arrival or eVisa form even when 'visa-free' — so always check the official portal for your exact nationality before you book.
Rules change — always verify with an official source for your nationality before you book.

💬 Traveller tips & reports

August is a different city — The Fringe doubles prices and quadruples joy — 3,000 shows, many free or pay-what-you-want at the Half Price Hut. Book beds in spring, or come in September instead.
