Health: Tap water fine. The Atlantic is the one force to respect: swim at flagged beaches — those currents are honest even in July.
Tap water: ✅ Safe to drink; coastal areas can taste faintly of chlorine but it's fine.
Safety: Portugal sits in the global top-10 of the Peace Index — one of the safest countries you can visit, full stop. Tram 28 pickpockets and the friendly 'hash?' oregano salesmen of Lisbon are the entire threat landscape. Both are beaten by a zipped bag and a smile.

🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free
Plant-based: Traditional menus are fish-heavy; vegetarians live well on soups (check stock), tomato rice and Lisbon's modern veg scene.
Gluten-free: Grilled fish + rice + salad is the national GF meal; pastel de nata is wheat, alas.
'Sem glúten' · 'vegetariano' — Lisbon and Porto both have full vegan quarters now.
🛂 Visa & entry
This is a Schengen-area country. Most US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian, NZ, Brazilian, Japanese and Korean passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone. From 2025 the EU's ETIAS pre-authorisation applies to visa-free non-EU visitors — check before you fly.
