Fees: MCB and SBM machines are low- or no-surcharge and everywhere that matters.
Limits: Typically Rs 10,000–25,000 per pull at MCB/SBM.

Bank exchange counters (even the airport ones) run fair spreads here — changing some EUR on arrival is perfectly fine.

Vaccines: Routine; dengue appears in occasional outbreaks — repellent in wet season (Nov–Apr).
Health: Water is officially treated; most visitors drink bottled after cyclones stir the pipes. On rocky lagoon entries wear water shoes (stonefish are rare but real). Clinics are good; Apollo Bramwell-class private care exists.

Safety: One of Africa's safest countries by every index — families wander night markets without a thought. Beach rule: don't leave bags unattended while you swim. Cyclone season peaks Jan–Feb; May–Dec is your serene alternative.

Plant-based: Huge Indian heritage = vegetarian paradise: dholl puri, gateau piment, seven-curries thali are all veg by default.
Gluten-free: Dholl puri wraps are wheat; rice-based Creole curries and grilled fish are the GF lane.
'Pena laviann' (Creole) = no meat · temple canteens serve superb cheap veg thali.
🛂 Visa & entry
For most short tourist trips, citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia and New Zealand either enter visa-free or get a simple online authorisation (an eVisa or eTA) before flying. Typical visa-free stays run 30–90 days. Rent a car for a day or three — Buses reach everywhere eventually, but a $30/day rental unlocks the island — wild south coast in the morning, Chamarel by lunch, sunset under Le Morne. Drive left, honk friendly.
