🏧 ATMs & money
Fees: Local bank ATMs are generally surcharge-free — only your home bank's cut applies.
Limits: Around 20,000–30,000 ден per pull at most banks — generous relative to prices here.
Best machines: NLBKomercijalna BankaHalkbank
This is an exchange-friendly country: menuvachnici (exchange offices) convert EUR cash at razor-thin spreads — arriving with euros and changing as you go is genuinely the cheapest path.
🩺 Health & safety
Vaccines: Routine only. Hikers doing Pelister forests in spring–summer: ask about tick-borne encephalitis and wear long trousers on trails.
Health: Tap water in Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola is safe and good. Pharmacies are plentiful; EU-standard care is a short hop away.
Tap water: ✅ Safe and good — Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola tap water is clean mountain supply. Drink freely.
Safety: Homicide ~1 per 100k — safer than most of Western Europe's big cities. Ohrid in August is crowded, not dangerous; the only 'risk' worth planning around is Skopje's winter smog — visit May–October and it's moot.
Emergency: 112 (192 police · 194 ambulance)
🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free
Plant-based: Fast-day (posna) food is your friend — Orthodox fasting dishes are vegan by rule: tavče gravče, ajvar, grilled peppers, beans.
Gluten-free: Grills (skara) are naturally GF; burek and bread are the wheat walls. Say 'bez gluten'.
'Posno' on a menu = plant-based by religious definition — the oldest vegan hack in the Balkans.
🛂 Visa & entry
For most short tourist trips, citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia and New Zealand either enter visa-free or get a simple online authorisation (an eVisa or eTA) before flying. Typical visa-free stays run 30–90 days. Some countries want a visa arranged in advance, and a growing number ask you to fill an online arrival or eVisa form even when 'visa-free' — so always check the official portal for your exact nationality before you book.
Rules change — always verify with an official source for your nationality before you book.
💬 Traveller tips & reports
Swim past the boardwalk — Town beaches pack out; the Kaneo cliff platforms and Gradiste’s coves ten minutes away are the postcard swims — free, clear, half as crowded.
