The Penang guide
📘 The detailed premium Penang guide — 38 pages
Hawker legends of George Town — char kway teow, laksa and kopi. Budgets, neighbourhoods, markets, stays, day plans and a Top 10 — every venue with a live Google Maps link. See inside →
This isn’t a blog post saved as a PDF — it’s a detailed, premium, 38-page A4 magazine — researched and checked in 2026, designed to be used. And every purchase comes as two files: the A4 edition for your laptop, tablet and printer, and a phone edition laid out tall and narrow so you never pinch or zoom — the same guide re-flowed into 99 phone-sized pages. Keep it on your phone or print it, open it at a street corner in Penang and it answers the question you’re standing there with.

Add it up: 530+ researched details — every price checked, every venue placed, every link live. More usable information than a week of blog-tab hopping, in one beautiful file.
Made for the phone in your pocket — as well as the A4 magazine you get a phone edition: one attraction per screen, nothing cut, every link still live. No pinching, no sideways scrolling.
Every venue is one tap from navigation — 107 Google Maps links mean you never type an address on holiday.
Real prices, not vibes — three honest daily budgets (€19 / €42 / €100) and prices on everything from a dorm bed to a splurge dinner.
Zero sponsorships — nobody paid to be in this guide. If it’s in, it’s in because it’s good.
Book everything from the page — stays open on Booking.com & Hostelworld, experiences on GetYourGuide, Trip.com & Klook, transport on official operator sites.
Plan-it-for-me included — ready day plans, a Top 10, a best-of snapshot, and neighbourhood “best for” labels that choose your base with you.
This page gives you the ranges. The guide gives you the places — every venue named, priced and linked.

🏧 ATMs & money
Fees: Kind by comparison: most local banks add no surcharge, or a small RM 10–12 at worst — only your home bank's fees apply.
Limits: Typically RM 1,500–3,000 per pull, some machines RM 5,000.
Best machines:MaybankCIMBPublic Bank
Licensed money changers (malls in KL, Lebuh Chulia in George Town) give excellent cash rates for major currencies — fine for topping up, no need to carry big sums.
🩺 Health & safety
Vaccines: Routine plus Hepatitis A; Typhoid if you'll eat adventurously (you should).
Health: Dengue is present — repellent at dusk. Most locals drink filtered water; do the same. Private healthcare (KL, Penang) is excellent and inexpensive; pharmacies dispense competently everywhere.
Tap water: ⚠️ Officially treated but most locals boil or filter it — stick to bottled or filtered to be safe.
Safety: One of Southeast Asia's calmest countries. The single habit to build: carry bags on the building side of the pavement — motorbike snatch theft is the local specialty, easily beaten. East-coast islands close in the Nov–Feb monsoon; the west coast (Penang!) shines year-round as your alternative.
Emergency: 999 all emergencies
🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free
Plant-based: Indian-Malaysian canteens are a vegetarian goldmine — banana-leaf thali, chapati, dhal for $2. 'Sayur saja' = vegetables only.
Gluten-free: Rice and rice-noodle dishes dominate; watch soy and kicap in stir-fries, and roti/mee are wheat.
Look for 'vegetarian' mamak counters; Buddhist 'zhai' shops in George Town are fully plant-based.
🛂 Visa & entry
For most short tourist trips, citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia and New Zealand either enter visa-free or get a simple online authorisation (an eVisa or eTA) before flying. Typical visa-free stays run 30–90 days. Some countries want a visa arranged in advance, and a growing number ask you to fill an online arrival or eVisa form even when 'visa-free' — so always check the official portal for your exact nationality before you book.
Rules change — always verify with an official source for your nationality before you book.
💬 Traveller tips & reports
Moonlight Bay — a private heaven — Keep going past Batu Ferringhi toward Teluk Bahang and slip down to little Moonlight Bay: a quiet, sheltered cove of clear water and shade, minutes from the crowds and a world away from them. Weekday mornings it can be entirely yours.

Jellyfish: no real season — They're around Batu Ferringhi all year — box jellyfish included. Swim inside the hotel nets but never trust them fully, keep vinegar close, and treat the pool as the proper swim.

Follow the 8pm queue — The longest hawker line is the menu. A 2 $ plate of char kway teow at a famous stall beats any restaurant — and the free CAT bus gets you between food streets.
