🏧 ATMs & money
Fees: Minibank ATMs are surcharge-free — but this is a near-cashless country; you may go the whole trip without notes.
Limits: 5,000–10,000 kr per pull (9,900 is a common ceiling) — not that you'll need it.
Best machines: DNBSpareBank 1
Don't exchange money for Norway at all. Card and phone cover 100 % of life; a single small withdrawal covers flea markets.
🩺 Health & safety
Vaccines: Routine only.
Health: Tap water is some of the world's best. Real risks live outdoors: weather turns fast on hikes (check yr.no religiously, tell someone your route), and fjord water is arrestingly cold year-round.
Tap water: ✅ Among the world's best — drink straight from any tap with pride.
Safety: Statistically among the safest countries on Earth. Oslo's east-side nightlife districts are lively, not dangerous. Your genuine adversaries: hiking weather and the bar tab.
Emergency: 112 police · 113 ambulance
🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free
Plant-based: Supermarkets are your ally: excellent plant-based ranges; restaurant menus always carry at least one veg dish, often superb.
Gluten-free: Fish, potatoes and root veg are the traditional GF core; 'glutenfri' labeling is universal and reliable.
Allergy law is strict — staff can list every allergen from memory. Just ask.
🛂 Visa & entry
This is a Schengen-area country. Most US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian, NZ, Brazilian, Japanese and Korean passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen zone. From 2025 the EU's ETIAS pre-authorisation applies to visa-free non-EU visitors — check before you fly.
Rules change — always verify with an official source for your nationality before you book.
💬 Traveller tips & reports
Student city physics — Quiz nights, cheap pints around Samfundet, kebabs that would cost double in Oslo — 40,000 students keep Trondheim honest. Follow the backpacks.
